Boiler replacement scheme over 60s

Boilers are indispensable for providing warmth and hot water in our homes, but as they age, their efficiency declines. To address this issue and provide a boiler replacement scheme for over 60s, the UK government has implemented the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.

The primary focus of the ECO initiative is to provide fuel security for UK households, whilst also reducing the UK’s Carbon footprint. Under this scheme, eligible individuals can access free boiler replacements, ensuring their homes are efficient, cost-effective, and comfortable.

In this article, we will explore the benefits of the UK Government ECO scheme specifically tailored to the over 60s. We will then delve into the eligibility criteria and outline the steps you need to take to benefit from a free boiler replacement.

How does the ECO boiler replacement scheme work?

Essentially, the ECO scheme enforces a Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO) on all of the major UK energy suppliers. This means that the major UK energy suppliers must provide financial support to low-income, vulnerable households that are struggling to heat their home.

The support provided by energy suppliers is generally focused on helping to reduce household energy usage. This often includes things such as helping to finance the replacement of a boiler, or installing insulation to help retain heat.

The ECO scheme will continue to run until March 2026, so if you haven’t yet applied, you’ve still got plenty of time!

How do I get a free boiler?

To be eligible for a boiler grant, you must either own your home or rent privately. You must also receive either Pension Credit (including Guarantee Credit) or Working Tax Credits.

The following criteria also apply:

  • Your boiler is inefficient (this typically includes any boiler that is 15+ years old).
  • The home you live in has low energy efficiency (a rating of D, E, F or G). You can find your home’s energy efficiency rating using the energy performance register, or ask your landlord.
  • You live in England, Scotland or Wales.

If you already have an energy efficient boiler, you may also be eligible if it is broken and repairing it or replacing it will be expensive.

I’m not eligible for the boiler replacement scheme for over 60s

How to apply for a free boiler upgrade

If you meet the eligibility criteria above and think you might qualify, applying for help is simple. There are two options available to you:

  • Contact your local councilfind your local council website, check whether they are participating in the scheme and locate their Statement of Intent to confirm you meet their requirements.
  • Contact your energy supplier directly – often the easier option. Take a look at this list to see whether your energy supplier is taking part in the boiler replacement scheme for over 60s.

We understand there is a lot of information to take in, which may be confusing. If you need help with applying, try asking a friend, family member or neighbour to look at it with you and talk you through it.

Remember, there is no guarantee that you’ll get 100% funding for a boiler replacement, even if you meet all the criteria. In some cases, you may be required to make a payment towards the cost of installing the boiler unit. This is particularly true if your central heating system and pipework needs updating as well.

How long will the process take?

You might not be surprised to learn that it’s not the quickest process in the world. The time it takes between applying and the boiler being installed is usually weeks if not a month or two. This is because the Local Council or energy supplier will need to do various checks to make sure you qualify.

If your boiler has broken down and you need something ASAP, it’s definitely worth replacing your boiler with BOXT. You could have your brand new A-rated boiler installed within a day or two, with the cost spread over manageable monthly payments.

Will I lose my Winter Fuel Payment?

The quick answer is no. If you’re lucky enough to qualify for the boiler replacement scheme for over 60s, this will have no impact at all on your Winter Fuel Payments (if you receive them). A more efficient boiler actually reduces the cost of heating your home and helps your Winter Fuel Payment last longer!

What other help is available?

Once you’ve had your new boiler installed, if you’re not happy with the quality of installation or boiler itself, be sure to contact the installer and ask them to put it right. If they do not fix the problem for you, contact Citizens Advice.

In addition to the boiler replacement scheme for over 60s, the Government offer a Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This is linked to the Government’s strategy of moving towards Net Zero. Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could get a grant to help finance the cost of replacing your oil or gas heating system with either a heat pump or biomass boiler.

You can only get one grant per property, with current grants available as follows:

  • £7,500 if you’re changing to an air source heat pump
  • £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump
  • £5,000 to help purchase a biomass boiler

If this sounds of interest, you can check your eligibility on the Government website.

What are the benefits of replacing a boiler?

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: Older boilers often consume more energy, resulting in higher utility bills and increased carbon emissions. New, modern boilers can significantly reduce energy consumption, leading to substantial cost savings and a reduced environmental impact.
  • Improved Reliability and Safety: Ageing boilers are more prone to breakdowns, posing inconveniences and safety risks. Newer and more reliable models offer uninterrupted heating and hot water supply. They also reduce the risks of gas leaks and carbon monoxide emissions commonly associated with older boilers.
  • Financial Assistance: Under the ECO scheme, over 60s may qualify for free boiler replacements if they meet certain eligibility criteria. This financial assistance is particularly beneficial for those on fixed incomes or limited budgets, reducing the financial burden of purchasing and installing a new boiler.
